The Knight, the Knave, and the Monster from the Id
Session Summary: 01/28/2024
Ahhhh, a PUZZLE and then a PRIMAL horror! The heroes encountered a riddle-chamber in the dreamscape's architecture, a space where three figures stood waiting: the Knight, the Knave, and the Spy, each of whom spoke in a combination of truth and misdirection that followed specific rules Gregor's mind had borrowed from the logic puzzles he had been given as a child. The puzzle was a test of the heroes' reasoning, which was genuinely NOVEL in a dungeon that had been testing primarily their physical capabilities and emotional resilience.
They solved it through careful analysis: determining which figure could only speak truth, which could only lie, and which could do either, and using those constraints to work out the correct combination of questions that would extract reliable information. The solution opened the passage forward, and Geist provided some typically unhelpful but atmospherically resonant commentary about the nature of puzzles in the Dreamlands.
Beyond the riddle-chamber lay something considerably less structured: a monster from the Id, a manifestation of Gregor's most primal impulses without any of the elaborate justification and self-narrative he had constructed to contain and direct them. This creature did not think or plan or rationalize. It simply WANTED: wanted to take, to consume, to eliminate anything that stood between it and its appetites. It fought with the terrifying efficiency of pure instinct, uncomplicated by strategy or mercy.
The battle against the Id-monster was one of sustained pressure rather than tactical elegance, the heroes holding the line against something that did not tire or doubt or reconsider its approach. Charles anchored the defensive line with holy fire and healing. Mutu absorbed punishment with the reliability of a wall. Kiren found the physical vulnerabilities that the creature's lack of intellect left undefended. Diana used HIM as a counter-pressure force that the monster had no framework for processing. They wore it down through teamwork and destroyed it at last, standing in the relative quiet of the chamber it had occupied and taking stock of what remained ahead!
