Jenny Dreadful’s Second Trial and the Last Battle Before the Return

Session Summary: 09/08/2024

Ahhhh, the FINAL session before the heroes' return to the mortal world, and Jenny Dreadful has been BUSY! She had taken her defeat in the previous encounter and done what skilled Fey operatives do when they lose in public: retired, reassessed, and prepared a formal response that would satisfy the court's expectations while giving her the best available chance at a different outcome. Under Fey law, a Trial by Arms offered precisely that opportunity, and Jenny had invoked it with the specific language that made refusal equivalent to a concession of defeat.

The Second Trial by Arms was a structured engagement, its rules enforced by the Glade itself rather than by any referee, which meant that the consequences of violating its terms fell on the violator with the full weight of Fey law. Jenny had prepared elemental creations for this trial: constructs of ice and fire and storm that she had assembled in the weeks since her retreat, each one designed to counter a specific element of the heroes' demonstrated capabilities. She had been studying them as carefully as they had been studying the Glade, and her constructs reflected that study in the form of TARGETED countermeasures.

The constructs fought with calculated precision rather than the wild fury of natural elementals: the ice construct restricted movement with the specific awareness of which heroes needed movement to function effectively; the fire construct pushed Charles onto defensive healing rather than offensive fire because it was heat-immune; the storm construct created a zone of interference that disrupted the coordinated communication the party had developed into a tactical strength. Jenny had done her homework.

The heroes had also done theirs. They had spent weeks in the Glade learning to read Fey tactical thinking, and Jenny's countermeasures, while accurate, were built on observations of who the heroes had been rather than who the heroes had become through the process of being HERE. The ice construct fell to Mutu's sustained assault. The fire construct fell to Charles's divine alternatives when his fire was neutralized. The storm construct fell to Kiren's precise strikes through its own turbulence.

Jenny accepted the result with the formal grace of one who has contested the outcome by every legitimate means available and lost by the judgment of the laws she invoked. She departed. The Glade quieted.

The heroes stood at the threshold of their return to the mortal world, the Glade of Gloaming Petals releasing them at last. They stepped back through the veil into a world that would look the same from the outside and be entirely CHANGED by what they now knew!
