Mother of Nightmares
Origins and Essence
The Mother of Nightmares is an ancient and enigmatic entity of unfathomable power, arising from the very fabric of the dreamlands themselves. She is a being of shadows and whispers, born from the primordial darkness that exists between dreams. To mortals and fey alike, she is a spectral figure who embodies the raw, untamed essence of fear and chaos. As the progenitor of nightmares, she feeds on the terror that haunts the dreams of all living creatures, drawing sustenance from the dread that pervades the subconscious.
Her presence is not confined to a single realm; she moves effortlessly between the dreamlands and the Veil of Slumber, a thin barrier that separates the waking world from the realm of dreams. The Veil of Slumber is her playground, a liminal space where she can manipulate reality and twist it to her will, crafting horrors that plague the minds of those who sleep.

Her presence is not confined to a single realm and it is rumored that she moves effortlessly between the dreamlands and can pass through the Veil of Slumber with no issue. That thin barrier that separates the waking world from the realm of dreams and nightmares. The Veil of Slumber is her playground, a liminal space where she can manipulate reality and twist it to her will, crafting horrors that plague the minds of those who sleep.
The Shadowed Domain
The Mother of Nightmares resides in a realm known as the Darkling Hollow, a place hidden deep within the dreamlands. This shadowed domain is a reflection of her own nature—a realm of perpetual twilight where shadows shift and move with a life of their own. It is a land of twisted forests, where the trees whisper secrets in a forgotten tongue, and the ground is littered with the remnants of shattered dreams. The sky is an ever-changing canvas of dark hues, pierced occasionally by flashes of eerie light that illuminate the grotesque landscape.
In the heart of this realm lies her palace, the Obsidian Spire, a towering structure made of dark stone and veined with threads of pure nightmare. It is said that those who gaze upon the Spire are instantly struck by visions of their deepest fears, their minds assaulted by a flood of terrifying images and sounds.
The Withering Man and the Forbidden Pact
Among the countless nightmares that traverse the dreamlands, one nightmare caught the attention of the Mother of Nightmares—an exceptionally powerful and relentless entity born from the dreams of a mortal who no longer lives. This nightmare, later known as the Withering Man, was filled with an insatiable hunger for power and independence. Sensing his potential, the Mother of Nightmares chose to intervene, severing his connection to the mortal dreamer who first birthed him. She freed him from his origin, transforming him into a Nocturne—a nightmare untethered from the person who first dreamed it, now independent and capable of growth and learning. As a Nocturne, the Withering Man became an entity with autonomy and a will of his own. Unlike other nightmares, who are bound to the minds of their dreamers, the Withering Man could continue his existence as long as he fed on the gossamer created by the dreams and nightmares of the living. With his newfound freedom, he began to grow more ambitious, seeking not just survival, but dominance over the dreamlands themselves.
The Forbidden Pact
Intrigued by the Withering Man’s ambitions, the Mother of Nightmares offered him a dark pact. She granted him even more of her power, allowing him to manipulate nightmares and weave them into reality. This gift transformed the Withering Man into a formidable force, feared throughout the dreamlands. With his enhanced abilities, he spread terror and chaos, feeding on the gossamer produced by the nightmares he created.
However, as with all bargains struck with the Mother of Nightmares, there was a hidden price. The power she bestowed upon him was tied to her whims and caprices, and her favor was as fleeting as the end of a nightmare.
The Betrayal and the Severed Bond
As the Withering Man’s power grew, so too did his arrogance. Knowing that his independence could only be fully achieved by escaping the Mother of Nightmares’ influence, he devised a cunning plan. Disguising himself as a lesser fae, he infiltrated the Court of Twilight’s Embrace, where he slowly and diligently gained the favor of the ruling Count. Over time, his intelligence, charm, and apparent loyalty allowed him to rise through the ranks, ultimately becoming the Count’s First Counselor.
In this position of power, the Withering Man secretly corrupted many of the Court’s fae, twisting their minds and making them his loyal servants. Under his subtle influence, these fae sowed discord and spread fear, allowing the Withering Man to further extend his control. His ultimate goal was to usurp the Count, seize control of the Court of Twilight’s Embrace, and build a new power base from which he could challenge the Mother of Nightmares.
The Withering Man’s betrayal culminated in a sudden and violent coup. He attempted to overthrow the Count and take the throne for himself. Though his plan nearly succeeded, the Countess of Twilight’s Embrace, a powerful fae of immense wisdom and strength, intervened at the last moment. In a desperate battle, the Count was lost to the fae—either slain or trapped beyond reach in the twisting realms of the dreamlands.
Though the Countess struck down the Withering Man, banishing him from the First World, she was unable to destroy him completely. He fled back to the dreamlands, wounded but not defeated, vowing vengeance against those who had thwarted his ambitions.
The Role of Geist
Geist, a living spirit who had been imprisoned for centuries, was released at a time when the Withering Man’s activities saw a resurgence. The intertwining of the waking and dreaming realms signaled a disruption in the Veil of Slumber, believed to be caused by the Withering Man’s renewed attempts to harness the power of nightmares. Despite their mutual animosity, Moira sought Geist’s aid in combating this threat, recognizing the gravity of the situation.
Geist, aware of the Mother of Nightmares’ fickle nature and the dangers posed by the Withering Man’s overreach, reluctantly agreed to join forces with Moira and the players. He understood that the Mother of Nightmares remained an unpredictable element in this conflict, capable of tipping the balance in unexpected ways.
Current Conflict and the Mother’s Whim
The Mother of Nightmares continues to be a wildcard in the ongoing struggle for control over the dreamlands. Though she no longer supports the Withering Man, her chaotic nature means she can still manipulate events to suit her desires. The Countess of Twilight’s Embrace and Moira strive to stabilize the Veil of Slumber and prevent further incursions by the Withering Man, all the while remaining wary of the Mother of Nightmares’ unpredictable meddling.
Geist, now part of this uneasy coalition, must navigate his complex relationship with Moira while leveraging his knowledge to outmaneuver the Withering Man. The players find themselves ensnared in this intricate web of alliances and enmities, their actions pivotal in maintaining the delicate balance between dreams and reality.
The Feverlings – Her Agents of Chaos
The Mother of Nightmares created the Feverlings, elusive and terrifying denizens of the dreamlands, as extensions of her will. Born from the very essence of nightmares, these creatures serve as her agents, spreading fear and chaos wherever they go. They slip through the Veil of Slumber into the waking world, inciting fever and hallucinations in their victims and feeding on the resulting terror.
Recently, the actions of Gregor and the players within Gregor’s dreamscape have weakened the Veil of Slumber, allowing the Feverlings to enter the city of Lepidstadt. Sent by the Mother of Nightmares to gather information, these creatures have been feeding on the populace, causing an outbreak of fevers that induce delirium in their victims. The Mother of Nightmares is aware that the Withering Man has nefarious intentions, though she does not yet know the full extent of his plans or his interest in the black sand of Nod.
Legends and Rumors
Ancient tomes speak of the Feverlings as the “Whispering Shadows,” entities that carry the voice of the Mother of Nightmares. It is said they murmur her desires and commands, spreading her influence wherever they go. Some scholars believe that defeating a Feverling can weaken the Mother of Nightmares’ grip on the dreamlands, though such victories are often short-lived, as she is a relentless and eternal entity.
Conclusion
The Mother of Nightmares is an ever-present shadow in this volatile landscape, her intentions inscrutable, her power immense. Her influence can turn the tide of battle, manipulate alliances, and shatter the fragile peace that holds the dreamlands together. She is a force of chaos and terror, a primal entity who embodies the fears that lurk in the deepest recesses of the mind. To confront her is to face the very essence of nightmare itself, a challenge that few are brave or foolish enough to undertake.
