The Courts of the Fey

Session Summary: 06/23/2024

Ahhhh, the COURT reveals itself in all its terrible BEAUTY! The heroes reached the inner gathering places of the Glade's Fey court: that timeless space where the lords and ladies of the Twilight realm conducted their politics, pursued their vendettas, and managed the elaborate systems of obligation and debt and fealty that constituted Fey governance. It was beautiful and horrifying in approximately equal measure, which is a good working description of most things the Fey create.

No swords were drawn in the court. No spells were cast. The danger was entirely conversational, which was in some respects more stressful than combat because the heroes' ability to identify threats was less well-calibrated for social manipulation than for physical violence, and the Fey were EXTRAORDINARY social manipulators. Every compliment concealed an evaluation. Every offered seat positioned the occupant in a hierarchy. Every question created an opening that the questioner was already prepared to exploit.

The heroes gathered intelligence about the Withering Man's position within the court structure: his relationships with other Fey lords, his accumulated obligations, the specific nature of his interest in the black sand and the gossamer that the Lepidstadt operation had been collecting. What they learned expanded their understanding of the conflict significantly. The Withering Man was not acting on personal whim but pursuing an agenda that connected to centuries of Fey politics, a specific outcome that he had been working toward across a timeframe that made the heroes' months of investigation look like a brief morning's work.

They also learned things about Moria Dawnwhisper, about the Court of Twilight's Embrace's relationship to the Glade's central power structure, and about Geist's history within these courts that Geist himself had never volunteered. The information arrived in pieces from multiple sources, none of whom knew they were building a complete picture between them, and the heroes assembled it quietly over the course of the evening without giving any indication of what they were learning. A productive infiltration of the social space. Their best PERFORMANCE yet!
