IV. The Eyes
The shadows move in the Witchwoods. Not randomly, not in the way that shadows move when light shifts or sources change. They move in patterns that suggest awareness, that suggest deliberation, without any account being able to specify what they are aware of or what they deliberate toward. The Book of Unseen Currents notes that in the Witchwoods, shadows dance in luminescent space, their rhythms weaving stories hidden there. This is accurate as far as it goes. What it does not convey is the experience of being the subject of those rhythms.
The forest watches. Every account of the Witchwoods contains this observation, worded differently but meaning the same thing: the eyes. Not eyes that can be located on identifiable bodies. Not eyes attached to anything visible. Eyes that are present in the peripheral vision, in the spaces between the trees, in the depth of the darkness that the luminescent light cannot fully reach. Countless eyes, each with the quality of watching not with the predatory focus of something that hunts, nor with the blank gaze of something that simply registers, but with the specific investment of something that has been waiting and has now found what it was waiting for.
Whether this investment is benign or dangerous has not been conclusively determined. Travelers who have moved through the Witchwoods without incident report the eyes as simply present: disconcerting, unignorable, but not threatening in any active sense. Travelers who have found the Witchwoods difficult or harmful report the eyes as intensifying proportionally to their distress, as if the forest were responding to their fear with increased attention, which is either evidence that the Witchwoods are predatory or evidence that they are responsive, and the distinction is not always obvious from the inside.
What is clear: the Witchwoods knows when you are in it. This is threshold-consensus in its most direct expression: a space organized around the principle of being between is aware of everything that approaches or crosses the boundary it constitutes. The eyes are not a feature of the Witchwoods that happens to exist alongside its other features. They are what the governing principle of this place looks like when it attends to you.
